The Cogswell Benevolent Trust Awards $100,000 to Spaulding Youth Center’s New School Capital Campaign

March 29, 2012

The Trustees of the Cogswell Benevolent Trust, Manchester, New Hampshire recently granted $100,000 to Spaulding Youth Center Foundation to support a landmark initiative, Success Under Construction, A New School for Spaulding, to help continue Spaulding Youth Center’s 140-year history of helping tens of hundreds of at-risk children in New Hampshire.

Since 1943, the Cogswell Benevolent Trust has provided grant support to Spaulding and its predecessor organizations helping children with complex challenges reach their full potential. James L. Garvin at NH Division of Historical Resources documented the Cogswell Benevolent Trust’s influential role in the advancement of the NH Orphans’ Home and Daniel Webster Home, two of Spaulding’s predecessor organizations, in his publication: Chronology of the Evolution of the Webster Family’s “Elm Farm” (revised 2006) –

“In 1943, The Burleigh Farm and farm cottage, immediately east of the Daniel Webster Memorial Building, was placed on the market. Soon thereafter, the Cogswell Benevolent Trust purchased the property and donated it to the New Hampshire Orphans’ Home. In 1947, the institution, newly re-named the Daniel Webster Home for Children, repaired the Burleigh Cottage as a residence for about 20 girls with the help of an additional $5,000 donation from the Cogswell Benevolent Trust.”

In 1958, the Daniel Webster Home and the Golden Rule Farm merged to form Spaulding Youth Center.

The Cogswell grant supports Spaulding’s capital campaign to raise $3.17 million for a contemporary school built to meet the increasing demand for high quality special education programs and services for children and youth with autism, neurological or behavioral challenges. Designed to accommodate 100 students, Spaulding’s new school offers much needed space to expand its academic program which was lauded in 2010 by the NH Department of Education
with a much-coveted five-year approval rating. To date, the campaign has received gifts and pledges totaling $2.5 million toward its $3.17 million goal.

“Spaulding is exceedingly grateful to the Trustees of the Cogswell Benevolent Trust for their leadership level gift,” said Spaulding Youth Center CEO and President, Susan S. Calegari. “This grant is especially meaningful coming from a philanthropic organization that shares our long history and has supported Spaulding generously over the years enabling us to offer programs and services to NH children and families in response to changing societal needs.”
